Guest Teaching Assignments

Guest teaching assignments may be offered to you by the absence management system known as Absence Management, the Certificated Guest Teacher Personnel Employee or, less frequently, directly by a teacher/principal.

If you are contacted by a teacher or principal directly, make sure the Personnel Office is notified of the assignment for record keeping, payroll audits, and tracking purposes. You may always turn down an assignment, but a reason must be given for our unemployment reporting.

Guest teachers are notified as early as possible regarding emergency assignments. Although most assignments are made several days in advance, numerous assignments will be made the night before or the morning of the assignment.

One more important part of being a guest teacher is to always be prepared to work at a moment's notice.

If you are unable to work for any length of time, utilize the Absence Management system to enter your unavailable date range and/or do not disturb date range.

Guest teachers are not required to accept each assignment for which they are called. However, it is important that they be available on most occasions. Guest teachers who are available regularly are most likely to receive an opportunity for an assignment. You may request to work only on specific days, at certain grade levels or school sites; however, too many limitations restrict the opportunities for assignments.

On occasion you may be unable to fulfill an assignment after accepting the request. At that point, you must notify Absence Management as soon as possible and cancel your job. The system will automatically start calling for another guest teacher. Instructions are in the Absence Management guest teacher instructions pamphlet.

When you must cancel on the morning of the assignment, please

1) call the Absence Management line.

2) call the Guest Teacher Personnel Employee and leave a voicemail (760) 771-8694.

This is to alert the district of the cancellation so the class is covered in time. You cannot cancel an assignment through the system if there is less than 1 hour before the start time.

If a problem arises that will cause you to arrive later than your "assigned" check-in time, please contact the guest teacher personnel employee so that she is aware of your situation and she can notify the school.

You may be sent to a school where you are not needed because of an error on the part of the district. You will have the option to stay and work where needed (possibly another site), stay for half the day and see if anything comes open for later that day (you will get paid for half-day), or go home without pay.

The system will call up to sixty days in advance. It is your responsibility to remember your assignment. When calling and searching for jobs, please DO NOT call from school unless you are finished with your planning time or during your lunch time.

LONG TERM ASSIGNMENTS

Long-term substitute assignments become available throughout the year. The following applies to guest teachers who accept a long-term assignment:

  • Report Cards- At times a guest teacher is required to prepare report cards while in a long term substitute assignment. The guest teacher will receive hourly compensation for up to 7 hours.
  • Parent/Teacher Conference- Sometimes parent/teacher conferences come up while a guest teacher is in a long-term substitute assignment. If parent/teacher conferences are held after regular school hours, the guest teacher will receive hourly compensation. For hourly compensation, please complete an hourly time record sheet. The guest teacher time sheet should not be utilized for hourly compensation. Prior approval from the principal is needed when working extra hours.
  • Opening a Classroom- Long-term substitute assignments sometimes become available at the beginning of a school year. Two days of compensation may be granted to those guest teachers who must open and set up the classroom.
