Employment

APPLY

To serve as a guest teacher, an application must be submitted online to EdJoin, which can be reached through the Desert Sands USD webpage (www.dsusd.us). The following items are required:

  • complete an application for employment
  • fill out all necessary payroll forms
  • provide tuberculosis clearance
  • hold a valid standard credential or 30-day substitute teaching permit
  • fingerprint clearance (Live Scan forms are available in the Personnel Office)

30-DAY SUBSTITUTE TEACHING PERMIT

Applicants must provide:

  • an official verification of a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university
  • a transcript card verifying passing the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test)

This permit allows a guest teacher to work an unlimited number of days in the school year, but only 30 working days behind the same teacher. This permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).

BOARD APPROVAL

Guest teachers are formally approved by the Desert Sands Board of Education upon recommendation of the District Superintendent. At that time, the guest teacher may receive his/her first assignment. An active guest teacher list is developed and updated on a regular basis.

CREDENTIALING

It is the responsibility of the guest teacher to maintain a valid credential for employment. Should you accept an assignment with an expired credential/permit, pay will be withheld according to Education Code pending renewal or your credential/permit. The Certificated Guest Teacher Personnel Employee will assist you in applying for your credential/permit and/or renewal. It is ALWAYS the responsibility of the guest teacher to pay any fees due to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for any credential or permit.

IDENTIFICATION BADGES

The safety of our students and staff is very important to us. All Desert Sands USD employees are required to obtain and wear identification badges. Identification badges are necessary to be able to readily identify personnel who are authorized to be on campus or at the District Education Center (DEC). A Personnel Services employee will take your picture for your identification badge in the Personnel office.

DISCLAIMER

Employment status of a guest teacher is on an "if-and-as-needed" basis. This means the District reserves the right to decide if and when any guest teacher will be employed. No contractual agreement to employ any guest teacher for any number of days is either stated or implied. In general, guest teachers are not used during the summer months.
