Leadership remains to be one of the vital cornerstones of education. Its significance no doubt traverses every part of the national development thus, the need to develop leadership skills and values to the students who are considered to be the hope of our nation.

The important role of leadership in nation building had long been acknowledged by the Department of Education through the Supreme Student Government and the development of myriad school-based organization such as the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization, Barkada Kontra Droga (BKD), School Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (SDRRMC) and We Advocate Time Consciousness and Honesty (WATCH) Club; all of which are bounded to the same goal: to develop future leaders with knowledge, skills and values.

With this, Leandro G. Japos National High School organized TAKE THE LEAD: ECO-LEADERSHIP CAMP FOR STUDENT-LEADERS that shall address the mandated projects of the Supreme Student Government pursuant to the DepEd Order No. 43, s. 2005 which are as follows: (1) Leadership and Capacity-building Training, (2) Environment Awareness and Campaigns, (3) Peer Counseling and Values Formation Activities, and (4) Disaster Mitigation Programs. These themes are deliberately included to achieve an end goal which is to holistically empower the students to be effective and efficient leaders in the future.

Student Leaders Rise at TAKE THE LEAD Year 1 Camp

Leadership, environmental stewardship, and emergency preparedness took center stage as Leandro G. Japos National High School successfully launched TAKE THE LEAD Year 1, a two-day leadership camp designed to shape student-leaders into empowered, value-driven agents of change.

Held over the course of two intensive days, the camp gathered student representatives from various organizations and student councils for a series of workshops, outdoor activities, and nightly specials that honed their leadership potential and sense of community.

The opening day began with a formal program that included a leadership talk by Hon. Kenneth E. Tagaro, Municipal Councilor of Banaybanay, who emphasized the importance of integrity and service in youth leadership. School Head Mrs. Lorna D. Menor delivered the opening remarks, setting the tone for a weekend of learning, growth, and transformation.

Participants were also oriented on camp rules by SSG Coordinator Mr. Marbin Gesher Jay S. Deniega and introduced to a variety of engaging activities, including a Values Formation Talk, a TikTok Dance Challenge, and an Eco-Fashion Show under the guidance of Ms. Hermie Lyn Tibon, WATCH Coordinator. These nightly specials were not just for entertainment—they were designed to reinforce character-building, teamwork, and creativity.

Day two intensified the experience with physical activities such as Zumba, community service facilitated by YES-O Coordinator Ms. Catherine D. Pacay, and hands-on training in Basic First Aid and Rescue, equipping students with life-saving skills in times of emergency. An Eco-Lecture followed, instilling deeper appreciation for the environment and highlighting sustainable practices for everyday life.

The energy peaked during the Boodle Fight lunch and the Extreme Games, bonding participants across teams and clubs. The event culminated in an awarding ceremony and closing remarks by Mrs. Menor, who praised the students for their active involvement and commitment.

By the end of the camp, participants were not only expected to return to their respective organizations with a concrete action plan, but also with stronger values, broader perspectives on leadership, and practical knowledge in first aid, rescue, and environmental advocacy.

In the pursuit of effective leadership, it is imperative to recognize the interconnectedness of various aspects that contribute to a holistic environment. With this theme in mind, a recent leadership training event brought together esteemed speakers, dedicated supporters, and facilitators to delve into the multifaceted nature of leadership and its impact on creating a holistic environment.

As a fervent advocate for community development, she underscored the significance of proactive engagement and collaborative efforts in addressing societal challenges. Her impassioned call to action resonated with attendees, inspiring them to embrace their roles as catalysts for positive change.

Addressing a critical issue plaguing communities nationwide, representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Banaybanay shed light on the detrimental effects of illegal drugs. By highlighting the importance of proactive intervention and community awareness, they underscored the pivotal role of leadership in safeguarding the well-being of society. Their informative session served as a sobering reminder of the collective responsibility to combat illicit activities and promote a safe and drug-free environment.

Officers from different student organizations of the school come together in solidarity in the 3rd year of 'Take the Lead' Leadership Camp held at Leandro G. Japos National High School on April 4-5, 2025.

The two-day camp brought together student-leaders from different walks of life, united by their passion for growth, service, and community. The event featured a lineup of esteemed speakers who shared their expertise on various topics crucial to effective leadership.

Marydin G. Dalogdog, Forest Technician II and Youth Desk officer, kicked off the sessions with a discussion on environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and responsible stewardship.

Camille L. Niez, SK Piso Chairperson, took the stage to share insights on leadership, highlighting key strategies for effective decision-making, communication, and teamwork.

Noeh B. Masagnay, a member of DOSMART, provided a Basic First Aid Orientation, equipping student-leaders with essential skills to respond to emergencies.

In a poignant session, Vivian B. Capiña, Guidance Councilor II, addressed the critical topic of Mental Health, promoting awareness, understanding, and support for mental well-being.

Through interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and team-building exercises, participants gained valuable knowledge, skills, and perspectives to enhance their leadership capabilities.

The camp culminated in a thrilling finale, with extreme games that put students' cooperation skills, problem-solving abilities, and camaraderie to the test. The fun and challenging activities pushed participants out of their comfort zones, fostering a sense of unity and shared accomplishment.

The 'Take the Lead' Leadership Camp serves as a testament to the school's commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders, empowering them to make a positive impact in their communities.
