The Barkada Kontra Droga

The Barkada Kontra Droga (BKD) program is a peer‑based drug prevention initiative, designed to empower youth in promoting a healthy, drug‑free lifestyle. Developed jointly by the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) and the Department of Education (DepEd), the program was piloted in 2005 and has since expanded nationwide. BKD serves as a platform for student leaders to become advocates within their peer groups and communities, encouraging others to actively resist substance abuse 

BKD’s core objective is to raise drug awareness among students by utilizing peer influence as a positive tool for prevention and information dissemination—transforming social circles into support networks against substance abuse.

Legal Basis and Policy Framework

• Department of Education participation in BKD’s national rollouts and conventions, such as the 3rd National BKD Convention in April 2023, hosted in coordination with the DDB. These events reinforce the preventive education mission and foster inter-agency cooperation
  
  

Programs, Projects, and Activities

BKD program content includes:

• Launching Seminars and Youth Camps, where participants undergo interactive workshops on resisting peer pressure and understanding the risks of illegal drugs

• Drug Awareness Symposiums and Capacity-Building Sessions, often at division level, for BKD officers and peer leaders

• Peer-led school activities such as slogan-making contests, parades, zumba sessions, and infomercials to publicize anti-drug advocacy—similar to formats demonstrated in event programs uploaded online

• Multimedia campaigns, training on developing information‑education‑communication materials, and partnerships with DDB and other agencies showcased during national BKD conventions
  
  

BKD situates young people not just as recipients, but as agents of preventive education. Students trained through BKD seminars and camps become peer advocates—capable of:

• Conducting drug-awareness initiatives in their immediate barkada and school communities.

• Influencing attitudes toward substance misuse, helping shift norms through engaging, youth‑led communication.

• Participating in regional and national youth conventions, sharing best practices and co‑developing action plans

This peer-centered approach aligns with global best practices in health education, using positive peer pressure to reinforce behavior change.
