Ms. Limerick:

Hello! Welcome to the Ojeda News Network. My name is Ms. Limerick and I am here to speak with Mrs. Mcillece, a representative from Liters of Light. Liters of Light is an exciting program from the My Shelter Foundation. This project is helping people in Sub Saharan Africa and spreading all across the world! Mrs. Mcillece, what exactly does Liters of Light do?

Mrs. Mcillece:

Thank you Ms. Limerick for that introduction. Liters of Light is an inexpensive project that improves the daily lives of people. With the help of a water bottle, a small amount of bleach, and a proper installation, many homes now have access to light where there was once a blanket of darkness. For example, in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi, hundreds of thousands of people live in urban slums. A project like Liters of Light provides a chance for them to improve their challenging daily lives.

Ms. Limerick:

That sounds like a very important project, especially because one of Africa’s greatest challenges is that many of the economies are developing. That’s an economic challenge. Access to electricity is either incredibly difficult or expensive for people who live in poverty in both urban slums and rural areas. Mrs. Mcillece, how successful is your program?

Mrs. Mcillece:

This project has been a huge success as it brightens tens of thousands of homes, helping the 40% of people in Sub-Saharan Africa living in poverty. There are three main ways that it is improving life for Africans. Number one: with the light, students can now study to help improve their literacy and, as we all know, education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and improving Africa as a whole. Number two: Liters of Light is a much cheaper alternative to electricity. And Number three: there is an overall improvement to daily life when families have access to a light source.

Ms. Limerick:

It’s great that students have light to study, which will improve their literacy and help those students break the cycle of poverty. And by saving money, those families can afford more of the basic necessities, like clean drinking water, food, and clothing. How else will their lives improve?

Mrs. Mcillece:

Families using Liters of Light can cook inside, take care of their children inside, study inside, and not be constantly exposed to the dangers and chaos of the outside world.

Ms. Limerick:

Thank you Mrs. Mcillece for your expertise on Liters of Light, and thank you everyone for tuning in!
