On the cloudy morning of Thursday, February 17th, contestants Denali Anselmo, James England, Oran Saar, Dillon Store, Joey Begin, Anson Cassio, Nate Cook, Parker Plourde, Ben Leland, and Ben Sproul lined up at the starting line. The distance snowshoe race started off with Oran in the clear lead. “It was a grueling, icy course,” said Director Byard. “Conditions made the snowshoes heavier, cold water spraying on their backs must have made it difficult.” Despite the conditions, the competitors raced with lots of hustle. In the end, Oran Saar of Oceania came out of the race with the gold medal, followed far behind by Dillon Store from Europe. Denali Anselmo of the Americas followed closely behind, winning the 3rd place bronze medal. 4th was Ben Sproul of Africa. Nate Cook, also Africa, trailed behind winning the 5th place. 6th place was awarded to Parker Plourde of Oceania. Ben Leland, of Asia, came out with 7th. 9th place was Joey Begin of Asia. Finally, James England from the Americas finished with the 10th place spot. When asked what he thought about the race, gold medal winner Oran Saar replied “I feel great, ima fall over.” DJ Dillon Store, 2nd place, thought that the race was “Pretty good, fun to go through the slush. Good competition.” Denali Anselmo, 3rd place, said “The race was good. I could’ve done better if my boots weren’t coming off, but I still brought home bronze.” Ben S, 4th place, said that “It was fun, very wet, and I tried to run in size 50 shoes.” Competitor Joey Begin, 9th place, said “I’m glad I didn’t place last, for such a short notice I did good.” Finally, James England of the Americas said, “I feel dead. My legs are gonna collapse, It feels like I have 20lb weights on boots that didn’t fit.” There you have it, straight from the competitors. A hard and grueling race, but exciting all the same.
