Girls' Nordic Skiing Report

The Girls Nordic Skiing event had amazing races yesterday. There were four heats with two people facing off on a track of a giant oval. The race is two laps around the oval and after the first lap you switch over to the lane that is next to you. The medals go to the people with the fastest time. In Heat one was Anna from Asia and Laura from Oceana. The race started and Laura got off to an early lead, Anna losing distance. Laura was ahead and finished her first lap. Laura had just won the Biathlon before this but it didn’t seem to affect her. Anna gave it her all and made it ten seconds after. Overall Laura finished first, Anna finishing strong twenty seconds after.

The second heat started and the two olympians competing were Violet from Oceana and Makena from Africa. The race started and Makena got an early lead and kept it through to the second lap. Violet got stuck in behind but still gave it her all. Makena was speedy and finished first. I interviewed Makena after the race to ask her some questions. First question was how did you feel before the race. Her response was “ I was feeling pretty good and was ready to go win,”. Then I asked how she felt during the race. She responded with “ At the end of the first lap it was getting pretty hard to breathe especially with the cold air, but I just kept going as hard as I could,”. Lastly I asked her how she felt after the race. She answered “ I felt pretty good but tired. I was really happy that I finished and that I finished first,”.

Heat three was another good race with Ashley from africa and Erin from the Americas. Erin took a early lead and getting far ahead of Ashley. Right before the mid point of the second circle Erin had a tumble but she was fine. Ashley gained some ground but couldn’t get ahead. Erin came out first in the end finishing strong. Heat four started out with the two competitors being Hailee from the Americas and Alivia from Asia. Hailee bursts from the finish line gaining an early advantage. Alivia in behind going fast even with no poles. Hailee keeps the lead and finishing in a very fast time.

The fifth and last heat had a delay because of some technical difficulties happening to the cameras. They started it one day later. The competitors were Julia from Europe and Franchesca also from Europe. The race started out at a close tie. They were neck and neck but Julia was able to get slightly ahead. By the second circle she had a slight lead. Julia was able to hold it for the last length of the race finishing first. After all the caculations the medal winners were decided. The person wih the fastest time winning the gold medal was Luara from Oceana. Second place winning the silver medal was Hailee from the Americas. Finally coming in third with the bronze medal was Julia from Europe. Congratulations to all. The Girls Nordic Sking event was a great event indeed this year. This is your reporter Ben Robinson

The crowd buzzed with laughter and cheer. Chants could be heard across the frozen field. The sun was high and eager girls switched their weight ski to ski. A loudspeaker called Laura from Oceana and Anna from asia. The crowd cheered for the two girls as the siren rang signaling the start of the race. Laura took a steady lead as Anna stumbled and fell. As Laura closed into the second lap Anna strangled behind, slowing down as her energy decreased steadily. Laura completed her second lap as Anna struggled to get halfway around her second lap. Anna grazed over the finish line Finally. The crowd cheered and then slowly went silent and the second group of girls stepped up hesitantly to the line.

The siren rang again and the crowd cheered, Makena from Africa and Violet Oceana from sprang into action and slid down the course, A little slower but still non the less making their way to the finish line. Violet had little to no time to practice with the skis and lost balance a couple of times but stayed pretty upright. However Makena was speeding ahead and was almost half way across her second lap by the time violet crossed onto the second lap. Violet lost balance a couple more times as Makena seemed to speed up to hurry to the finish line. Violet slipped and fell but got up and eventually sped across the finish line.

Ashley from Africa and Erin The Americas from now stepped up to the line, both girls seemed excited to race against each other but nervous at the same time. By the time the siren had turned off Erin was speeding ahead by the second, each stride taking her a long distance ahead. Ashley seemed to have poor balance and struggled to keep up. Erin went full speed ahead and crossed the finish line with Ashley a bit too far behind crossing it eventually. Nothing too interesting happened as the girls both crossed the finish line in a couple of minutes.

Alivia Asia from and Hailee from The Americas from skied up to the line. Alivia threw her poles to the side, she angrily grumbled about how much she hated them and how they were of no use to her. The siren rang out and the girls took both of them short strides, granting them speed. This seemed to be the closest race so far with the girls striding side by side for a good minute. Alivia soon fell and struggled to get up. Hailee took this as a chance and dashed forward. Hailee sped in front taking the shorter lap first, Alivia slowly started to catch up but was in no rush to do so, she had felt “upset about it”. Hailee dashed across the finish line and alivia not too far behind her, finished still salty about falling down.

Julia and Franchesca from Europe stepped up to the line. The wind was not very strong but was noticeable on a completely different day. The sun was still out and the hill for the luge was being prepped. Julia took a great leap as the siren rang out. Franchesca is not far behind for most of the time. The last part of the last lap Franchesca took a big leap and kept up to julia but julia skied ahead at full speed just barely beating Franchesca.
