Girls basketball won a thrilling come from behind victory on their Senior Night versus Gresham on Feb. 25, winning 53-52.

The Scots started fast with senior 5-4 guard Aariya Lamoureux making two free throws after being fouled on a fast break after a steal. Then, a steal by senior 5-8 forward Lily Goldberg led to a fast break layup by senior 5-5 guard Heidi Chang had the Scots up 4-0 at 6:35. The Gophers stifled the Scots’ offense for the rest of the period, as the Scots only scored one more time on a layup from Chang and went into the second period down 17-6.

The Scots had a slew of offensive boards in the second period, but couldn’t get their shots to fall. Sophomore 5-6 guard Almedina Omerovic hit two consecutive 3s to help the Scots keep up, 21-12, at 5:18. Chang ended the first half with a 3 and the Scots went into the locker room down 28-17.

Senior 5-7 forward Saleemah Shabazz started the scoring in the second half with a free throw, then a midrange jumper from Goldberg at 6:15 got the Scots within 10, 30-20. The Scots were back down by 13 at 5:01, but 3s from Goldberg and freshman 5-5 guard Marley Higgins cut the lead to 35-28 at 3:00. The Scots were again down by 10 at 1:15, but they closed the period on a furious run, with a driving layup and a made foul shot by Goldberg, and a near buzzer beater 3 from Higgins to pull within 4, 38-34.

Continuing their hot shooting from the end of the third period, after a pair of long 3s from Chang to start the last period, the Scots had their first lead since the first quarter, 43-40, at 5:27. The crowd was going nuts. A jumper from Goldberg gave them their biggest lead, 45-40, then the Gophers went on a 10-1 run to take back the lead, 50-46, with 2:02 remaining. The Scots were down five, 52-47, with only 40 seconds remaining when senior 5-4 guard Brasil Campbell banked in a 3 to get within two. Goldberg made a foul shot at 20 seconds to get within one.

Down by one, 11 seconds left, Goldberg stole the inbounds pass from Gresham and the Scots called time out. After the break, Goldberg passed to an open Omerivic in the paint and she laid it in to take the lead 53-52 with 7 on the clock. Gresham drove the court and missed a 3 at the buzzer to give the Scots a well earned thriller of a victory.

The team mobbed each other at half court, then left to the locker room to the raucous cheers of the happy home crowd.

The team had lost to Gresham 56-47 in January. They ended the season with an 8-16 record, 5-9 in league play, ending 6th place in Mount Hood Conference.
