We encourage Bonner Scholars to find CLA sites within walking distance of Davidson College. We have many community partners within that distance that allow Bonner Scholars to gain experience while providing valuable contributions to the local community.
In some cases, Bonner Scholars may have a specific interests that results in them serving at community partner sites outside of walking distance or need accommodations within walking distance. In these cases, they can receive transportation assistance. If your CLA site is within walking distance reimbursement will not be provided, unless an accommodation is needed. If an accommodation is needed, please contact the Bonner Director or Assistant Director.
We provide support for transportation through reimbursing for rideshare trips and personal vehicle mileage as well as financial supporting the use of Davidson Outdoor bicycle rentals and Davidson College motorpool vehicles. You can learn more about how to utilize this support here.
All reimbursement requests must be submitted by the end of the semester in which expenses occurred. Reimbursement forms submitted more than 30 days past the end of semester may not be processed.
The Center for Civic Engagement will reimburse rideshare to and from CLA sites up to two times per week if it is outside of walking distance. Please carpool whenever possible.
Students driving their personal vehicle will be reimbursed at the college’s standard per mile reimbursement rate.

If your CLA site is not within walking distance, you may use Uber up to twice per week. Additionally, during the fall and winter months, you are permitted to use rideshare if you are walking after dark, encountering inclement weather, or have safety concerns.
The Bonner Scholar program is no longer allowed to use Uber for Business due to tax implications for individual students.

Please read these essential safety steps if you decide to use a rideshare service:
Check the make, model, color and license plate of the car against what is on your app.
Check that the driver’s photo and name also match the app.
Ask the driver: “What’s my name?” If the driver doesn’t know your name or if any of the details on your app do not match what is in front of you, do not get in.
It’s also a good idea to send friends your trip plans by using the share function on your app.

If you are wish to use Davidson Motor Pool, please schedule a time to discuss your needs with the Bonner Director or Assistant Director. If utilizing a motorpool vehicle is deemed the most appropriate transportation support, information will be shared with you to enable you to schedule your own motorpool vehicles.
In order to request Davidson College motorpool vehicle, you must have had your United States driver's license for one year. Before being issued a vehicle, your driving record will be checked for significant moving violations.
If you are interested in renting a bike from Davidson Outdoors (DO) to get to and from your CLA site one or two times per week, please submit this form. After receiving approval from Bonner staff to proceed, you will follow DO's process below.
Davidson Outdoors (DO) has a bike rental form that you will need to fill out each time you want to rent a bike. Bonner will cover the cost of a bike rental twice per week to get to and from your CLA site. Let DO know you are a Bonner Scholar, and they will bill it to our office. Prior to your first rental you will need to schedule a time with DO where they do a 30–45-minute ride with you around campus. Sign up for the first ride using Katie Mathieson's Calendly.
