All students are welcome in the Bonner Scholars Program. Bonner Scholars Program Staff strive to ensure international students have an equitable experience within our program. Below is information on topics about which we frequently are asked questions.
Transportation
Access to transportation to community partners can be a challenge for Bonner Scholars but perhaps more so for international students who do not have a US drivers license or vehicle access. Our programs strives to eliminate this barrier to serve for all Bonner Scholars.
We provide support for transportation through reimbursing for rideshare trips and personal vehicle mileage as well as financial supporting the use of Davidson Outdoor bicycle rentals and Davidson College motorpool vehicles. You can learn more about transportation support here.
Taxation
As an international student, to receive any type of payment from Davidson College, you must complete a Sprintax Calculus profile annually. You will receive an email directly from Sprintax Calculus with an access link (this is not spam). Based on your answers to the questions, your treaty benefits will be determined, and forms will be populated with your information that you are required to E-sign. You will receive reminders to update your profile on an annual basis.
First year students will receive notification to complete their Sprintax profile in July or August. In subsequent years, you will be asked to update your profile in January.
Treaty benefits are determined by an agreement between your country of residence and the United States and are governed by Federal legislation.
Bonner payments that can be affected by this taxation include Summer Living and Summer Earnings, Rising Senior Fund, Community Funds distributed to you, and any reimbursement for a purchase.
It is important for you to consider this tax deduction from your gross Bonner earnings while applying for Summer of Service Living funds.
When you fill out your Summer of Service Proposal, you will be given the option to "gross up". Grossing up means you are requesting to increase the amount of money drawn down from your $6,000 total Summer of Service Living allotment.
Summer of Service Earnings money cannot be grossed up.
Since you are taxed on reimbursements, please do not make a purchase unless absolutely necessary. It is better for a domestic Bonner Scholar to make the purchase since they are not taxed on reimbursements.
If you have additional questions, contact Susan Caldwell in Business Services.
Work
As an international student, your Bonner hours do not need to count as part of your 20 hour per week employment limit. As this related to your visa status, questions about this should be directed to the International Student Engagement office.
