At Davidson, education abroad is integral to your liberal arts experience as you learn and grow within an entirely new cultural context. Below is what you need to know if you chose to study abroad to keep receiving your Bonner Scholar stipend.
Make sure to look at both the Guidelines and the information on receiving your stipend.
Guidelines:
During your time abroad, you will need to write three reflective journals. Each journal entry should be 2 full pages, 1.5 spaced, using a standard font, font size, and margins. Make sure to include your name on each journal at the top of the first page. Journals should be emailed as PDF attachments to the Bonner Scholars email address. Please name them with your last name followed by the reflection number (ex. Smith. Reflection 1). Do not share them in Google Drive.
Choose 3 journal entries from the following list.:
Cross Cultural Dissonance Reflection - This will take you to another page in Google Drive.
Spend some time noticing the ways informal philanthropy is enacted. Some typical American forms include holding the door open or giving money or food to someone in direct need. Are there similar or different behaviors?
Spend some time noticing and reflecting upon gender norms and/or the ways gender is expressed? How might this be similar or different from what you have experienced in the past?
If you get the chance, volunteer with a nonprofit organization and reflect on that experience. How did it feel? How were you received? Compare and contrast to experiences in the US.
Write about something you’ve observed that should be adopted here in the US in some form.
Write about something you’ve observed that could be improved by adopting a practice from the US.
Conduct an interview with a local nonprofit professional or someone who is substantially involved in a cause for the public good. Write about what questions you asked and why as well as their responses. What did you learn?
Study Abroad Stipend Payments:
The first half of your stipend will be issued after receiving your first two reflections.
The second half will be distributed after receiving your third reflection. Please wait until after mid-way through your study abroad experience to write your this last reflection so you have more time to soak everything in. The best reflective practice is continuous.
