Restaurant and Food Service Management. - Darien High SchoolThe Business, Marketing and Entrepreneurship Club, Distributive Education Club of American, known as DECA, had a great official first year at Darien High School. DECA is a national business club organization that sponsors business industry-validated competitive events that are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism, according to the organization. DECA’s flagship evaluation process involves students in both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive (role play) component with an industry professional serving as a judge.
In 2015-2016, 100 students officially joined DECA with membership dues paid to DECA National, Connecticut and Chapter levels with business teacher, Claudia Gray as their advisor. The members met on Wednesday or Thursday mornings to plan for the spring state competition with nine senior students on the DECA Leadership Team. 68 DECA club members competed at the DECA state competition held in March 2016, up against over 1,000 DECA members from various high schools around the state.
Seven students from Darien High School attended DECA’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC) from April 24-28th. The conference and competition included top performing students from all fifty United States, U.S. Territories and nine foreign countries with over 18,000 DECA members attending. Students from DHS attended workshops and participated in the organization’s competitive events program which is designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development. Five students that placed in the top three of their category at the state competition, competed at ICDC. After placing first at the Connecticut state competition, Paige Adams placed in the top ten internationally!
Darien DECA Club excitement is already brewing for next school year. A 16 member leadership team has been established with multiple roles to further develop our community service and DECA campaign events. We look forward to the many students that have expressed interest in joining DECA next school year following our first official year at Darien High School.
