The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation case has caught the attention of the public, as Heard has made accusations that Depp has been abusing her. Depp himself denied these accusations, saying they are false, and has sued her for defamation. These legal proceedings follow a long history of complicated fights and turmoil.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were married from 2015 to 2017. Jacob Sarkisian and Zac Ntim from Insider magazine said Depp met Heard in 2009 on the set of The Rum Diary and the couple started dating in early 2012. Before even being with Depp, in 2009, Heard was arrested for physically assaulting then-girlfriend Tasya van Ree, but Ree said herself that Heard was wrongfully accused and the cops were misinterpreting the situation. Heard was never charged. Several years afterward, in 2012, Depp and Heard were together. The two finally tied the knot in 2015 with a private ceremony.

On May 23, 2016, Heard filed for divorce, accusing Depp of abuse and, just a few days later, obtained a temporary restraining order against the actor. She told the public that Depp had been physically abusive during their relationship. Heard also claimed that the abuse happened while Depp was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Elena Nicolaou from Today’s News stated that Depp had denied these allegations, saying he has never hit a woman. Days before Heard filed for a divorce, an incident took place where Depp allegedly threw his phone at her, supposedly leaving her with a bruised face. However, police looked into this incident and said that the claim was false.

Heard received a $7 million settlement from the divorce but was set to give it all to charity, as stated on People magazine. However, she said she did not have the money. Fast-forwarding to 2022, Depp and Heard’s defamation lawsuit was set on April 11. Depp took the stand and claimed that Heard was the abuser in the relationship, saying that she would make little digs, including demeaning name-calling. “These arguments would lead to violence,” said Depp. Amber would shove him or throw a glass of wine at his face. He would then lock himself in the bathroom to get away from her. When the two were once in an argument a little after their wedding in 2015, Depp claims that Heard severed his finger with a bottle of vodka.

Heard made other allegations against him, as well. She said that when Johnny was high or drunk, he would try to make her have more intimate moments with him and force her to do things she did not want to do. The first time Heard took the stand on May 4, 2022, she was asked to recall the first time Johnny had hit her. She replied that they were sitting on the couch talking, and there was absolutely no argument going on. She asked about his tattoo that says “wino forever ''. She thought it was funny, so she laughed. She said that, after she laughed, Johnny had slapped her across the face.

The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case is complicated and a drama-filled mess. The media gets new information about what has supposedly happened with the ex-lovers. As of now, the trial is set to end on May 27, 2022. It will be interesting to see who is deemed innocent and who is guilty.
