When Russia first invaded Ukraine, no one thought it would get to this extent of seriousness. People have been killed, cities have been destroyed, and families have been broken apart. In this cartoon, I demonstrated that Russia is like paint when spilled. It keeps spreading until the paint can is empty. Russia’s colors and Ukraine’s colors are shown mixing together when Russia’s colors are poured into the country. Ukraine is not willing to give up and the country is fighting back against Russia to prevent them from taking over the entire country.
COVID-19 has affected billions of people all over the globe and it is no mystery the fear it has caused in many lives. Since the start of the virus, some people have been hopeful that the next year will be better. Though it seems COVID just won’t go away. Things may be improving but the virus is not completely gone. Joe Biden has been the political leader since the beginning of COVID and many people look up to him for the encouragement that things will get better. In this political cartoon, I show Joe Biden every year of COVID making a speech to encourage audiences that “Next year will be better!” As the cartoon continues through the years, Biden becomes more and more unsure. At the end, it shows Joe Biden as a skeleton and the year unknown, as a representation of the feeling that COVID will never end.
Gas prices have been on the rise all over the United States making traveling an expensive necessity. The average gas price, for the first time, has risen above $4.00 a gallon in every one of the 50 states. The rising gas prices are affecting people all over the United States and they do not seem to be slowing down. For teenagers who are just getting their first cars, it is already a great expense and the continually rising price for gas is only adding to the cost. In this cartoon, I am showing the trouble gas prices are causing, specifically for new drivers. The top cartoon pictures a teenage boy who was just gifted his very first car for his birthday. The bottom picture shows him realizing the price of gas. His expression shows his realization that he is going to have to be spending a lot of money on gas, just so he can use his new car.
My cartoon is a symbolic representation of how many women are feeling about the injustices in the United States against women. Though this scene never actually happened, it can feel like women’s liberty, freedom, justice and rights are being stripped from them, as their opinions are being quelled into silence. Several women have been crushed under the government's decisions and excuses-- numerous of whom aren’t very well known, either. This drawing is meant to bring attention to the inequality that is becoming less and less subtle in our society.
My comic depicts a white man who is saying that America is equal to a group of minorities. They do the blinking man meme before they ask if they should “tell him” how it actually is. America is not equal to people who are not: white, CisHet, and men. Women are paid less than men for the same job. In Oregon, women earn on average 20% less than men. In Texas, it is seen as child abuse to allow your child to transition. In Tennessee, you cant change the sex on a birth certificate for any reason, even if the person is fully transitioned. A person of color is five times more likely to be pulled over without reason than a white person. According to the NAACP, “65% of Black adults have felt targeted because of their race… approximately 35% of Latino and Asian adults have felt targeted because of race."
