Cavite State University (CvSU) – Carmona Campus, through the Extension Services Office and the Department of Hospitality Management (DHM), in partnership with the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) – Carmona and the City Government of Carmona, successfully conducted the “Brewing Inclusivity: Barista Skills Training for Persons with Disabilities” on November 13, 2025, at the PDAO Office, City of Carmona, Cavite.
The event brought together persons with disabilities (PWDs) and volunteer mothers of PWDs, creating an inclusive learning environment where participants were immersed in the fundamentals of coffee preparation and beverage service. As the community eagerly anticipates the opening of the Kalingyakap Cafeteria in January 2026, the training played a key role in equipping future staff with practical and marketable barista skills aligned with industry standards.
Throughout the day, participants received hands-on instruction on crafting 11 hot and cold coffee beverages, including espresso-based drinks, blended beverages, and flavored specialty coffees. The training placed emphasis not only on the technical aspects of drink preparation but also on sanitation standards, proper handling of equipment, beverage presentation, and customer service etiquette. This holistic approach ensured that participants gained a thorough understanding of the workflow within a café setting.
The sessions were spearheaded by Mr. Klenton R. Torrevillas and Dr. Joan L. Fortuna, faculty extensionists from the DHM, who served as the Lead Barista Trainer and Barista Trainer, respectively. Their combined expertise in culinary operations, beverage preparation, and community-based training contributed significantly to the success of the program.
Representatives from PDAO-Carmona and the City Government of Carmona also extended their support throughout the activity, reflecting the strong collaboration between the university and the local government in advancing inclusive development initiatives. Mr. Neil C. Poblete served as the host and activity facilitator, ensuring the smooth flow of the program and active engagement of the participants.
The training likewise served as a platform to build confidence and self-esteem among PWD participants, many of whom expressed excitement about applying their skills in the soon-to-open community café.
