Assess health/illness beliefs, values, attitudes, and practices of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations in order to provide comprehensive care to diverse populations.
To learn more about how health practices vary among different cultures, Adriel conducted two separate interviews with a Russian immigrant who lives in his city. He assessed her health/illness beliefs, values, attitudes, personal practices, family dynamic, and involvement in the community. He learned more about the Russian-American population and the Russian culture through her stories and personal experiences. As he spoke with her, Adriel discovered that her health practices and perceptions, which were originally influenced by her Russian heritage, differ greatly from typical Western culture. For example, he learned that alcohol consumption is more accepted in her culture, that Russians value community more than typical Americans, that Russians tend to practice more homeopathic remedies, etc.
Adriel believes that if nurses understand the similarities between themselves and their patients, as well as the nuances that make cultures unique, that nurses will be better prepared to give the best patient-centered care possible.

Additionally, Adriel completed an online course on delivering culturally competent care, for which he received the certification below. He also delivered a presentation about Haitian culture, which illuminated some of the values and health care beliefs of Haitians and Haitian Americans. The presentation and speaker notes can be viewed below.
