This assignment focused on sentinel events, and challenged Adriel to do in-depth research about the problem of inpatient suicide. Not only did he write about inpatient suicide, he also created an evidence-based plan in order to decrease the amount of inpatient suicide that takes place. Proposing plans to reduce the incidence rate of sentinel events requires leadership expertise and high-level decision making. This is because it requires the nurse leader to have the ability to critically evaluate a facility's practices and propose policy changes that affect a multitude of people.
The paper also spoke about oversight issues and accountability for care delivery by acknowledging that clinics should take responsibility in addressing sentinel events that take place in their own facilities. This can be further accomplished by creating root cause analyses, reporting sentinel events to the Joint Commission, collaborating with other special interest organizations, etc. This paper focused on an event that occurred specifically in the mental health setting. However, the measures mentioned below that prevent inpatient suicide can be applied to a variety of settings, such as in the ICU and nursing homes.
To learn more about the topic, read Adriel's assignment below on inpatient suicide.
