In the ASBSN program, simulations are rites of passage that all the students must complete.
Simulations, or "sims", are fictional clinical scenarios concocted by the instructors for students to perform in. They thrust students into unexpected clinical situations where they are forced to think on their feet and deliver nursing care to actors, with the added pressure of an audience watching via closed circuit surveillance. Sims are often performed in groups, and require interprofessional communication between the participants and other players, such as the physician.
Below is a journal reflection about a simulation meant to teach the students about patient prioritization. It required a high level of communication amongst the participants, as Adriel's group had to brainstorm amongst each other which history questions to ask; collaborative skills, because Adriel's group worked together to assess the patient while simultaneously administering meds and providing comfort measures; and evidence-based/patient centered care, because they used therapeutic communication to reassure patients on an individual level while still making scientifically based interventions.
