Participate in the process of inquiry, analysis, and information literacy to promote quality care and patient safety.
When Adriel rotated in the emergency department during his 5th semester, he decided to do further research on the stroke protocol of his facility, as well as analyze the protocol with reference to the latest evidence-based research available. He made recommendations after comparing the protocol to evidence-based practice. The process required information literacy in order to extrapolate useful information from the available data in order to make appropriate recommendations.
Adriel discovered that his facility could improve their protocol in a variety of ways. For example, they did not utilize the NIHSS stroke scale for stroke patients (which has been shown to be more accurate), and they lacked a dedicated stroke team (which has been shown to reduce mortality and improve outcomes) for stroke patients. Thus, Adriel recommended that the facility follow the updated stroke assessment guidelines and form a stroke team. If Adriel's evidence-based recommendations were followed, it would undoubtedly lead to improvements in the quality of care and patient safety at that facility.
