The lessons below are provided for the middle school classroom. However, a teacher must use his or her discretion to determine if the text (written text, art, media, video, etc.) and the topics are appropriate for use in his or her classroom. Even though all lessons are vetted for alignment of the standards, some of the readings included in the lessons have been edited in order to ensure that the material is appropriate for middle school use. Therefore, it is suggested that the text within the lessons is used instead of pulling the same text from another source.

The Window Pane strategy involves both individual and collaborative work with students presenting their responses to the class, and, most importantly, teachers giving immediate feedback using a simple model. The process begins with each reading-group receiving an anchor-sized piece of paper and the students folding a three inch vertical “sidelight” on the right side of the paper when the paper is turned horizontally. Next, four or six “window panes” are folded into the remaining sheet of paper to match the number of questions students will answer for the reading. Each group is given the questions on a particular story. Following the directions for each question, students work individually or together to formulate the answers. After each group has presented their answers, the teacher can offer feedback on the three inch vertical fold to the right.
