Players drive the story and exploration of the world. When it comes to questing this is what players need to do:
Players create or accept quests.
A group of 3-6 players decides what quest they want to do and finds a GM to run that quest, everyone agrees on a date and time, some quests might take more than one session, this should be discussed when planning.
There are several types of Quests players can partake in.
Using services like Kasoon & DND Speak, GMs will create and submit randomly generated quests that players can accept.
These are quests players come up with themselves. Such quests are submitted to the community mods and then added to the Quest Board on our server. Examples include:
“I want to explore some hexes!”
“I want to investigate the source of the undead in Hex B8”
“I need to find more iron for my armor crafting project, need assistance settling hex c7 to secure iron mine.”
Every few days - mods will post up some rumors
These are not quests in and of themselves but serve as seeds that will inspire players and GMs to submit quests related to the rumors.
Example: Myles Gillcrest - “I heard there were lizardfolk spotted 3 hexes south of the Big Skull Rock.”
Spring up organically through play
Examples:
An evil PC is selling the bad fruits and turning people into undead.
This is causing Undead to appear within the settlement
NPC Quest pops up to deal with it
Ghost vampire on the loose after being freed by players
New quest-lines spawn to deal with the fallout of this event
Railroad choo-choo train.
Static pre-planned often pre purchased/written adventures.
These are seeded into the world and exist without any player input, waiting for players to stumble across them.
Overtime these quests will generate rumors and influence their own hex and surrounding hexes with their influence.
One shots that take place beneath the ruins of The Outpost
They can come in any flavor:
Randomly generated
Pre-planned. They are what they are.
3-room or 5-room dungeons etc.
You only get one shot.
How far can you go in one session
Once you leave the delve is either gone or resets
Has to be completed in one run, no long rest
Any new GM for PV must run a delve.
Each GM should only have one of each of these quests posted at a time:
A Delve Quest
a Side Quest
a Planned Quest
Your first Paradise Vale session will be a Delve. You provide the delve and advertise for it on the quest board.
Based on how well received the delve session is, you are allocated hexes and asked to join the full-time GM team.
Delves are easy to run and should only take a single session.
Each GM should only advertise one delve at a time.
Delves never reward permanent magical items, only consumables commensurate with the level of the delve. (This is to prevent gold & magic item farming from delves.)
A GM can have one Planned Quest line (sometimes called an adventure, or an adventure path) at a time. This should be centered on a Hex with a Wondrous Location. If none of your hexes have a wondrous location, choose one hex to house the core of your Planned Quest.
Overtime you will need to seed rumors about your planned quest to the settlement
Overtime you planned quest should begin to influence your other hexes.
Each GM is encouraged to have one side quest related to the content or events transpiring in their hexes.
A side quest can be generated though a variety of means as discussed elsewhere on this page.
Rumors, story/roleplay, random generator, etc.
Players may propose quests. When these are posted, any GM can accept the quest and run it.
When you accept a quest you need to be willing to:
write or find an adventure that matches the player's proposed quest outline/goal
be available to run the game with the players who posted the quest from start to finish
if you foresee this taken several sessions, please let the players know in advance of scheduling the sessions.
If you are feeling uninspired or spicy, try using a random generator to created either your planned quest or your next delve, or perhaps just a fun side quest for one of your hexes.
Submit your proposed adventure to the mods. Be prepared to run the adventure if approved.
Once approved post it up on the quest board.
