English 9 will provide students with essential written and verbal skills needed for the Next Generation ELA Learning Standards and assessments such as the English Language Arts Regents, which they will take in their junior year. Students will utilize the Sadlier Vocabulary Workbook Series (Level D) to develop and expand vocabulary. Instructional units from the Holt Handbook will be reviewed to improve grammar and usage skills. In addition to reading and analyzing poetry, short stories, and short non-fiction pieces, students will study full-length works by Homer, Shakespeare, Harper Lee, Laurence Yep, and Barb Palser. Students will be expected to write an MLA-style research paper and make use of several databases to research information. The overall objective of this course is to insure that students are college and career ready.
