The English Support class is designed to complement and supplement studies in the primary (core) English course and to prepare students for the English Language Arts Regents exam, as well as college and career readiness. Students will work on polishing writing skills, enhancing vocabulary, and using correct grammar in speaking and writing. Students will also learn strategies on how to improve their understanding and appreciation of grade-level informational and literary texts. Teachers of English Support classes may periodically re-teach content from the student’s primary English class. They may also allow students to complete assignments and, if warranted, assist them with assignments in Support Class. Instruction in the Support Class will address the Next Generation ELA Learning Standards, which will reinforce the information being taught in the student’s primary English class. To accomplish this, teachers, in addition to using texts from the primary English class, will use a variety of instructional materials taken from traditional and non-traditional sources such as online programs that are suitable for alternate day teaching. Teachers may also employ methodologies appropriate for struggling learners. The English Support class meets every other day (A or B Days), which will give students the opportunity to meet with their English teacher an additional two-three times a week.
