AP Language and Composition is the recommended course for honors level students in grades 11 or 12 who are willing to experience the rigors of reading and writing encountered by those in a college freshman English composition course. The reading assignments for this course, which includes speeches, articles and editorials from periodicals such as The New York Times, will encourage students to become increasingly aware of various writing styles and how different authors use rhetorical devices to advance their aims in writing. In addition, the course will offer students practice and helpful criticism necessary to develop as flexible writers who can write in a variety of modes, including analysis, argumentation, description, comparison/contrast and classification. This course assumes that students have command of Standard English grammar and encourages growth in terms of developing stylistic effects created by sophisticated syntax and diction. The Advanced Placement (AP) examination taken in May, may qualify students for advanced standing or college credit.
Requirement: Summer Assignment, AP Exam in May
