Academic Skills Development

7

This academic development class provides intense practice with various skills that are needed for understanding grade-level informational texts in science, social studies, and English, as well as fictional works. Specifically, students will work on reading skills and techniques; test-taking strategies, especially as they pertain to multiple- choice questions; and developing and maintaining reading stamina.

Students will also work on skills to support comprehension such as visualizing, sequencing, and annotating. Instruction will be provided in domain-specific and academic vocabulary acquisition and use across the content areas. The conventions of Standard English grammar and usage will be reviewed and applied to constructed-response assignments in the content areas. In short, Academic Skills Development 7 will introduce and review reading comprehension approaches that can help students not only on state assessments but also on the path to college and career readiness.
