Algebra 1A uses the Connected Mathematics Project 4 (CMP). CMP is a problem-centered curriculum promoting an inquiry-based teaching-learning classroom environment. Students are given many opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through hands-on investigations and real-world scenarios. The Algebra 1A course is year one of a two year sequence that meets the standards of a typical Algebra 1 course. The modified pacing allows students to deepen their knowledge of algebraic concepts that will prepare them for further secondary math learning.
Unit 1: Linear Relationships
Main resources: Algeblocks, Variables and Patterns
Students will explore integers and variables using algeblocks.
Students will be instructed how to recognize, describe, and analyze two kinds of relationships between variables.
Students will be taught how to better identify and analyze those relationships using numeric, graphic, symbolic, and verbal representations.
Unit 2: Linear Relationships
Main resources: Students will be instructed on linear relationships.
Students will be taught how to recognize linear relationships by the constant rate of change between two variables in a contextual situation, a table, a graph, and an equation.
Unit 3: Non-Linear Relationships
Main resources: Thinking With Mathematical Models
Students will be working on ways to develop a mathematical model and its applications in problem solving. Algebra is used to model and answer questions about real-life situations.
Students will be taught how to represent data using tables, pictures, graphs, and equations.
Students will work to describe the relationship between two variables in dealing with linear functions and equations.
