Parents, you are an integral part of helping your children navigate future choices. Here are some steps to take as students enter high school:
Meet with your school counselor to share insights about your student.
Attend Freshman Night, Junior Day and Senior Night events, as well as any other relevant presentations.
Complete your Parent-Student meeting based around your student's YouScience results (part of Career Exploration course).
Assess your student's need for academic support -- whether to let go or provide additional resources.
Encourage your student to invest deeply in preferred activities or to try new things if they have yet to find a passion.
Help your student to gain needed life skills.
Visit college campuses when you are traveling, or when students are older, plan travel to include college visits.
Plan ahead to meet the financial demands of college.
Students face many emotions when confronted with future. It can feel overwhelming, especially if you do not have an idea what you might do after high school. Begin with these steps to create the best options for your future:
Select classes that you will enjoy, and try your best to demonstrate curiosity, team work and service within each classroom.
Reach out for help if you are struggling in any area of life -- academically, socially, emotionally, spiritually. Many people stand ready to support you and encourage you to reach your potential.
Choose to be involved in school, church or community activities. As you find things you especially enjoy, invest more deeply in those things.
Take YouScience. It's free, and it will give you a lot of insight about how you learn and interact, as well as pairing your personality and brain science to suggest potential careers for you. Talk these over with your parents, friends, and teachers.
