A Level

If you've done GCSE Product Design or Level 2 Engineering we take the level of detail to the next stage, looking in more detail at products, target market, suitability, sustainability, materials, costs and much, much more.

You've probably looked at a design and for various reasons it appeals to you. Some good examples are; the iPhone, Dyson vacuum cleaner, a VW Beetle and many more. The point is, how have these achieved iconic status? This course aims to go into some depth, giving you a greater understanding of design theory and good practice, as well as giving you an opportunity to put theory into practice and create an artefact of your own.

The course is split into 15 units, each unit will be assessed to give you a good idea of your progress. There is a final examination consisting of two papers - Paper 1 - 2h30m on Technical Principles (120 marks, 30% of final grade), Paper 2 - 1h30m on Designing and Making Principles (80 marks, 20% of final grade). The NEA (Non-examined assessment) is a substantial practical piece, 100 marks and represents 50% of your final grade, evidenced with a product and a design portfolio.
