Year 8 Timber-Based Materials

Product Design is one branch of the Design and Technology course, leading into the Timber-Based Materials Specialism at Key Stage 4.

Product designers create and evaluate ideas, turning them into tangible inventions and products. The product designer's role is to combine art, science, and technology to create new products that other people can use. This evolving role has been facilitated by digital tools that now allow designers to communicate, visualise, analyse and actually produce tangible ideas in a way that would have taken greater effort in the past.

In year 8 we do a furniture design based challenge in which we learn about different timber based materials. This provides context to a practical challenge task to use logical and mathematical thinking to come up with a solution to a design challenge.
