A Level Art and Design Textiles slides

Overview

In A-Level Art and Design Textiles we complete two components over two years, with component 1 being the self-motivated and chosen element that is weighted at 60% of the final grade. This includes a personal investigation in the form of an essay related to the project research. Component 2 is the externally set assignment, weighted at 40% of the final grade. The topic is revealed to us by the exam board in February of year 13. This allows us 2-3 months to complete another project, showcasing skills and knowledge gained during component 1, culminating in a 'period of sustained focus' at the end of the project in which a final piece is made under exam conditions.

Skills Development

We begin year 12 with a skills development module to focus on new techniques and skills that follow on from and develop on ones learned at GCSE level. We set the pace expected for A-level study and give regular feedback and support, verbally and formally. Some examples of techniques, both traditional and modern, we cover are: Hand Embroidery, Silk Painting, Lino Printing, Tie Dye, Batik, Knitting, Heat Fusing fabrics and other materials, 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, Crochet and Macrame. We also work on how to 'up the standard' to A-level quality when it comes to portfolio pages, and encourage the development of a personal individual style of working.

Stepping Stone

This course is an ideal lead into many creative courses at university level, or into employment within the textiles industry. Personal skills that are developed include: resilience, self-motivation, time-management, creative problem solving and perseverance. We encourage students to work within topics that they feel passionate about and have personal interest in, for both components as we believe that it improves motivation levels and encourages students to develop personal views and opinions about a wide range of topics. If you have any questions about the course, or any other aspect of A-level Textiles, please get in contact with us.
