Social studies instruction in Conroe ISD is based on the CISD Explores model. The mission of the model is to foster civic and cultural competence that equip students to become informed and engaged citizens in their communities. We promote the fundamental values and ideals of our democracy through the acquisition of disciplinary knowledge, informed and reasoned decision-making, the practice of respectful communication and discourse, intellectual processes, and problem-solving skills. Through the development of these skills, we prepare our diverse population of learners to navigate within a global community.
A large chunk of our social studies learning in third grade is project-based. Project-based learning (PBL) is a teaching method that involves students working on projects over time to solve problems or answer questions. PBL projects can last from a week to a semester and sometimes involves students working in small teams. PBL offers students a chance to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience.
PBL incorporates grade-level instruction and is designed to meet academic goals and standards (TEKS). Students learn content and skills while working collaboratively, thinking critically, and often revising their work.
The term "project-based learning" is sometimes used interchangeably with "experiential learning" or "discovery learning". We encourage this type of learning autonomy because it's interactive, engaging, and authentic.

Once a quarter prior to STAAR, usually toward the end of the 9-week grading period, CISD administers a district-wide grade-level assessment (District Quarterly Assessment, or DQA) across all content areas. These assessments are aimed at collecting data and tracking student growth across the district on targeted priority TEKS.
