What is Lexile?

A Lexile measure (or level) is a tool that provides a numeric representation of a student's reading ability or the difficulty of a text. It's expressed as a number followed by the letter "L" (e.g., 850L), with values ranging from below 0L for beginning readers to above 1600L for advanced readers.

Lexile measure indicates a student's reading comprehension ability, usually obtained through reading assessments. Lexile level indicates the difficulty of a text, such as a book or article, based on factors like vocabulary and sentence complexity. By comparing a student's Lexile measure to the Lexile level of a text, you can determine if the text is a good fit for the student's reading level. A good match is generally considered to be within 100L below and 50L above the student's Lexile measure.

Lexile measures help educators and parents match students with reading materials that are at the appropriate difficulty level for each individual student.
