Going to Experimental Lakes, to the Aki Centre we’ve done some outstanding work. The experiences at Eco-Craft and being shown artwork that represents a certain part in the environment, also using unique materials to enhance the meaning of the artwork, deepened our understanding of what's happening, what will happen, and stuff that has happened. In our advisory we have been using the information we were learning throughout the experiences in the year so far to include in a story that surrounds sustainability.
My name is Shyra, and here is a little summary of what I’ve been brewing up in my sustainability story. So far, we split sustainability into three different sections of focus, and finding a focal point for each subject.
How does sustainability play a part in the environment?
How does sustainability play a role in the community?
How does sustainability play a part in your life?
And in our sustainability story, we all chose a theme to push through in the story. My theme for the sustainability story has two parts to it: When something gets taken out or breaks, everything else falls apart. But just because everything fell apart it doesn’t mean that it can’t be rebuilt. I wanted to do this theme because it is happening right now and happening all around us, and that being climate change. Whether that be it falls apart instantly or a slow burn, we keep taking things and it causes things to fall apart in our environment.
An example of this can literally be something as simple as taking out that one block of jenga, and then the tower all falls apart. I think it’s also important to be supporting yourself to be able to support the environment and community, because then there’s another example of not taking care of your body, your health, which can cause it to go fatigued, or unwell. I want to take this story, and bring it into my LTI work moving forward, which is already connected in some way. In my LTI work I wanted to create a town in the program I use for Tech Hub that has deteriorated, and make it look like nature is taking over, which can actually be seen as the two themes I chose.
It can be seen it fell apart because no humans were no longer living in that town, or destruction happened which led it to fall apart.
It can also be seen as nature rebuilding itself and using what has already been destroyed to rebuild a new habitat.
As an individual that was a chosen point I wanted to include in my story, is to be able to support yourself so that your health, and physically won’t fall apart, so that you are also able to support your role in sustainability, environment and even community. And as an individual, it’s important to gather together with other people and communicate, discuss, and interact about problems that are happening in the environment. Using my individual points and community points, led me to my environment focus for the story: Ecosystems should be kept in tact and in place making sure there are no disturbances within that ecosystem.
That’s all so far, and I’m hoping to experience more to connect to my sustainability story and learn more about our environment, now I want you to think:
What can you do as a person, with other people, and in the environment to be more sustainable?
