Keeping up with Ms. Keenan
by Kaelee Perdomo
We have been able to interview Ms. Kristen Keenan, one of Community High School’s English teachers and co-advisor of the school newspaper. Ms. Keenan has worked at CHS for 18 years and enjoys that every day is never the same. She loves that she can be herself around everyone and feels comfortable just "being me." Before teaching, Ms. Keenan served in the U.S Navy, and her favorite holiday is Memorial Day. She loves animals and has adorable pups herself. Ms. Keenan is an admirer of Henry Bergh, who was the founder of the ASPCA. She volunteers at shelters and doggie day care centers.
Ms. Keenan is starting a mobile grooming shop and hopes to open up an animal rescue center if she ever wins the lottery. She is also fluent in sign language and has used it with deaf dogs. If she could visit anywhere in the world, it would be to the outback of Australia, mate! Ms. Keenan’s favorite movie is the 1967 prison drama, Cool Hand Luke, staring Paul Newman. Her favorite food is pineapple, and her biggest pet peeve is petty people. It was an honor to discover her accomplishments, particularly about her commitment to helping animals and her military service.
Hashing it out with Mr. Hynes
by Kaelee Perdomo
We’ve also interviewed Mr. John Hynes, one of the school’s history teachers. Besides teaching in the classroom, Mr. Hynes is also the coach for the CHS boys basketball team. Mr. Hynes enjoys seeing the growth and success of his students throughout his career. If anyone was his student, they would know that Mr. Hynes is a big fan of Tom Hanks, Seinfeld and Star Wars, with May the 4th being his favorite holiday. If he won the lottery, Mr. Hynes would buy the New York Yankees. Speaking of baseball, Mr. Hynes caught two foul balls at Major League games and has also shaken hands with President Bill Clinton in Grand Teton National Park.
Each day before beginning the lessons, Mr. Hynes likes to start off with a trivia question. If the class gets it right, they get a point. Whichever class gets the most points at the end of the year gets a special prize. Mr. Hynes would like to visit Ireland, his favorite food is steak and potatoes and his biggest pet peeve is when someone parks their car over the line in a lot. It was pretty fun to learn about what Mr. Hynes enjoys in and out of the classroom.
Matilda Gaugler
by Kaelee Perdomo and Joe Soriano
Last but not least, we have Matilda Gaugler. Matilda attended Seton Hall University and started at CHS in the 2021-2022 school year as an assistant. Then she became one of our history teachers. Like Ms. Keenan, Matilda embraces the kind atmosphere and family-like wholesomeness at CHS. She’s inspired by the strength of women and admires her Aunt because she is strong and independent. If she were to win the lottery, the first thing she would do would be to donate her winnings to the Breast cancer society. Besides being a teacher, something new to learn about Matilda is that she loves hiking, reading and being an older sister.
If she could travel anywhere around the globe, Matilda would head to Ireland. Her favorite holiday is Easter, and the food she enjoys most is Penne alla Vodka. Speaking of foods, her biggest pet peeve is when people chew with their mouth open. Her favorite TV show is the comedy/crime drama, Castle.
