An Unforgettable Christmas Story
By: Samaira Vivek
Once upon a Christmas, I stared at the snowy window. I was waiting for my older brother, Jack, to come back from his cousin’s house in Cincinnati. “Mom, when is Jack coming back? He’s supposed to be back for Christmas.” I asked. “He’ll be back soon.” My mom said.
I hear the doorbell ring. “Jack is here! Jack is here!” I screamed excitedly. I thought it was Jack, but it was really my dad and my Uncle Carlos come back to get the Christmas tree. “Oh” I say. “Oh? Is that what you say when we bring in the Christmas tree?” My dad says. “I thought it was Jack for a minute.” I said. “We just called him. His flight got delayed. So, he’s still in the airport in Cincinnati. Apparently, there is a huge blizzard there.” Uncle Carlos says.
I looked at the weather forecast on my phone in Cincinnati, it is like -2 degrees there. “Come on Megan, let's decorate the tree.” Uncle Carlos says. “Isn’t Jack supposed to be here for this?” I asked. “Don’t worry, he won’t miss out much.” My dad said. So, we ended up decorating the Christmas tree without Jack.
Jack always made Christmas special. He’d make Christmas jokes, watch Christmas movies and bake cookies with us. He also used to read me “The Night Before Christmas” when I was younger, but now he reads me A Christmas Carol. We finish the book around Christmas Eve. This time, he had to travel to Cincinnati, which I am not happy about. I hope he comes home on time.
The phone then rings. It was Jack. My dad picks up the phone. “Hello? Jack?” My dad asks. My dad speaks to Jack on the phone then hangs up. “That was Jack. His flight is in an hour so he might come home soon. He tells the family. “Time to make Christmas dinner and bake cookies.” Uncle Carlos announces. “Can’t we just wait for Jack to come home?” I asked. “Don’t worry, he’ll be home soon.” My dad says.
