The process of making a music video requires students to work collaboratively to decide on the concept, locations, camera angles, and story of the video as well the technical understanding of the hardware and software used. Students then work together to record the audio and to film and edit the video.
For this music video, Brendan Jennings performed Free Fallin' by Tom Petty. The video was produced by the CHS Communications & Broadcasting Class with Adiana Porta, Kaelee Perdomo, Brendan Jennings, and teacher, David Graessle.
The first step to making a music video is to record the audio. But even before that you obviously need to have a proficient musician to record. Luckily, Brendan knew the song well. Assuming the song is well rehearsed, it's time to record the audio.
To record audio the class used Pro Tools software and a Digi 003 board to input the signals to a Mac computer. Brendan's guitar was recorded first and we worked to get it to sound great by re-recording and punching in when needed. Both a condenser mic and a dynamic mic were used on two separate channels to create a stereo sound. After adding some compression, reverb, and equalization, we were happy with the sound and ready to overdub the vocal part.
Using a sensitive Neumann condenser microphone, Brendan wore headphones and sang along to the track he had previously recorded on guitar. While multiple takes are an option, he was able to nail it in one take! Once again we added a touch of reverb and compression to the vocals and EQ'd it before mixing it down with guitar part into a stereo audio track ready for listening.
We then played this audio track over a portable bluetooth speaker so that we could capture video of Brendan playing and singing along in different scenes. First, we used an HD camcorder and an iPhone to capture different shots of Brendan in the music room. Then we then took the speaker and camcorder into the stairwell and videoed him playing along there as well.
The three videos were uploaded to the video editing software Final Cut Pro and synced with the previously recorded audio. This process takes some time but once lined up we decided which video plays at what point. We were also able to add pictures from Adiana Porta as a subject in the video and continued to develop the concept for the video. Various effects and transitions were used to add interest as well as titles in the beginning and end. The completed video was shared down as an MP4 file ready for viewing.
It's a process to get from concept to final video but all of the students involved contributed to the final product and I'm proud of what we've created. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it!
This video is a project of the Communications Broadcasting class that uses photos from Brendan Jennings, Adiana Porta, and Kaelee Perdomo set to the song What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong 1901-1971
The song appreciates the beauties of the world. Brendan's photos from Estes Park in Colorado located in the Rocky Mountains and Surf City, NJ truly capture that. Adiana included pics from Upstate NY and NYC which both posses different but equally impressive landscapes. Kaelee included pictures from Pennsylvania which also show beauty and appreciation of the earth.
