Juniors are encouraged to speak with college reps when they are on campus. Get your pass in Naviance! Start to visit colleges!
Attend Spring College Night
Join us on in the Auditorium to hear from a panel of current Myers Park Seniors who will be speaking candidly about their college search journeys. Colleges will also be joining us to address certain questions, such as “Does Test Optional really mean Test Optional?” and “Do colleges really read my essay and if so, what is a “good” essay?” 2026 DATE COMING SOON
Start the College Search
Check out which college representatives are coming to visit MP and schedule an appointment with them through Naviance.
Go on college tours, research, and use Naviance to make a list of 8-12 schools that you want to apply to. Make sure you have a good mix of safety, target, and reach schools.
Create a Resume
A resume will help when asking for teacher recommendations (see next step below). If you don’t have many things to list, use this as an opportunity to plan your Summer. Get a job, volunteer, or explore some new activities. Fill up your resume!
Ask for Teacher Recommendations
Ask at least 2 teachers, in person, if they will write a recommendation for you. One of these teachers must teach a core subject. Provide your teachers with your resume or Senior Brag Sheet (attached). The more information they have, the better!
Take the ACT/SAT
If your scores aren’t where you want them to be, use your Summer to study and retake the ACT/SAT. Be sure to save your ACT/SAT login information, so you can send your scores in the Fall.
Create a CFNC Account
Complete the NC Residency Determination form and save your RDS number. You will need this for The Common App! You can also use CFNC to explore colleges and research scholarships.
Create a Common App Account
When you’ve completed the steps listed above, you can create your Common App Account. It will open on August 1st. Go ahead and get to work on your essay! In the fall, you and your counselor will walk through The Common App during your Senior Meeting.
Create a NCAA Account
This is for Athletes intending to play in college ONLY. Make sure you are registered with NCAA Eligibility Center.

***Wait for Senior Year!
When Senior year starts, be on the lookout for information about Senior Night. We will review the college application process and answer any questions you may have. We will also meet in the Fall for Senior Meetings. This is when we’ll review what you accomplished over the summer, discuss your class rank (run in September), and go over all the extra details! You will also receive your official transcript. If you need an unofficial transcript during the June or August, reach out to your counselor. Once you submit your applications, you will need to fill out the FAFSA to see if you qualify for financial aid. Applications for the FAFSA and most scholarships usually open in January.
Helpful Tips for the Common App Essay
How Much to Write: Your essay should be between 250 and 650 words. This range allows you to provide enough detail to tell your story while keeping it concise and impactful. Aim for the higher end of the word count to ensure you fully convey your experiences and reflections.
Understand the Prompts: Read all the prompts carefully and choose the one that resonates most with you. Pick one that allows you to showcase your unique story.
Be Authentic: Write about something personal and meaningful. Admissions officers want to get to know the real you, so share your genuine experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
Show, Don’t Tell: Use vivid details and examples to illustrate your points. Instead of saying you’re passionate about something, describe a specific moment that demonstrates your passion.
Focus on a Specific Story: Narrow your focus to a particular event. This helps keep your essay concise and impactful.
Reflect on Your Experiences: Explain what you learned from your experiences and how they shaped you. Reflection shows maturity and self-awareness.
Be Clear and Concise: Avoid unnecessary words and jargon. Make sure every sentence adds value to your essay.
Revise and Edit: Proof-read your essay multiple times. Get feedback from teachers, friends, or family members to catch any errors and improve clarity.
Stay Positive: Maintain an optimistic tone. Even if you’re writing about a challenging experience, focus on how you overcame it and what you learned.
Start Early: Give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm, write, and revise. Starting early reduces stress and allows for thorough editing.
Be Yourself: Don’t try to impress with big words or complex ideas. Just be yourself and let your personality shine through.
