“SOAR HIGHER – Be an EAGLE” by Owning Your Learning
Eagles take ownership of their learning.
Academic achievement is measured through a uniform grading system at CHS.
Each nine-week grading period must contain:
Major assessments (tests, essays, projects, etc.) will account for 60% of the nine-week grade.
Minor grades (quizzes, classwork, homework, etc.) will account for 40% of the nine-week grade.
Course Grades Will Be Weighted As Follows:
Eagles respect consistent expectations that support equity and student success.
Consistent Grading Practices
Each department sets a consistent minimum number of major and minor grades per term for common courses to support equitable grading practices.
Common assessments should be developed and used in all common courses to help keep grading aligned and consistent for all students.
PLCs should be used for teachers of common courses to create similar opportunities for students to demonstrate success.
Grade Entry/Record-Keeping
Teachers should record all grades in PowerSchool.
Teachers should update PowerSchool weekly and provide timely feedback so students have the opportunity to review graded work before major assessments.
Teachers are responsible for the security of their grades.
Under no circumstances should students be allowed to grade assessments or input grades in PowerSchool.
Outside of the Engaged Eagle Flight Plan, teachers will notify parents every 4.5 weeks of students with a grade of “D” or “F” via email, phone call, or Rooms App. Teachers should document all communication and conferences.
PowerSchool Expectations
The percent should equal the grade.
There should be no grade over 100% in the gradebook.
For missing & makeup assignments, teachers should enter 1% in the grade book and provide a comment with a reason and additional details. This serves as a placeholder, indicating that the assignment is incomplete but can be made up.
Missing Assignments are incomplete tasks when a student was present for instruction.
Makeup Assignments are incomplete tasks when a student was absent for instruction.
For retakes, teachers should always include a comment that lists the original grade and any additional details.
Teachers should only enter a 0% in the grade book on an assignment that cannot be made up (i.e., due to academic dishonesty, missed flight plan deadline, etc).
Teachers are expected to update gradebooks weekly.
Teachers should notify the registrar of any grade changes after grades are stored.
Grades for transfer students can be obtained from the counselor or registrar.
Homebound Grading
Updating grades and monitoring the completion of assignments for homebound students are the responsibility of the teacher of record, not the homebound teachers.
The teacher of record should contact the parent and homebound student weekly and update the gradebook, entering a 1% (or exempt) for all grades that need to be made up.
Eagles strive for excellence through preparation, review, and growth opportunities.
A review should be built in for all major assessments.
Teachers will accommodate school activities, illness, or unusual circumstances in managing make-up dates.
Students who miss a major assessment but were present for all prior instruction and aware of the due date must complete it on the day they return, unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher.
Students may improve their grade on a major assessment by the deadline established in the Engaged Eagle Flight Plan to achieve a maximum grade of 70%. *This does not apply to Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment credit and some CTE classes.*
Eagles demonstrate self-advocacy by staying caught up when absent.
Students are expected to make up all work missed during an absence.
Students are responsible for getting assignments when they are absent from school.
Students who are absent from school for an extended period should request assignments from their teachers before the absence.
Teachers will accommodate school activities, illness, or unusual circumstances in managing make-up dates.
Eagles own their success by tracking progress and taking action to improve their work.
Purpose Statements:
The purpose of the Engaged Eagle Flight Plan is to help students become accountable thinkers by actively participating in the process to make up and improve their work.
This plan will:
Provide students with opportunities to take an active role in monitoring their progress (PowerSchool/Canvas) and identifying areas for improvement.
Offer students a strategy for reviewing their current grades and taking action steps.
Improve communication between teachers, students, and parents.
The Engaged Eagle Flight Plan will be developed by the following deadline:
The next WIN time following an absence (for makeup assignments).
The next WIN time after a grade concern has been identified (for missing assignments or grade improvement).
Student Expectations:
Students are expected to schedule a conference with teachers to develop their Engaged Eagle Flight Plan when any of the following occur:
A student did not complete a major assignment (either missing or makeup).
There is a pattern of incomplete or missing minor assignments resulting in a low or failing grade.
A student needs support with grade improvement (i.e. retest).
Students are expected to meet the deadlines listed on the Engaged Eagle Flight Plan.
Students will complete all work according to the plan's timeline.
Students are expected to communicate their Flight Plan to parents via email, Canvas, or another appropriate method.
Teacher Expectations:
Teachers are responsible for collaborating with students to develop their Engaged Eagle Flight Plan when:
A student did not complete a major assignment (either missing or makeup).
There is a pattern of incomplete or missing minor assignments resulting in a low or failing grade.
A student needs support with grade improvement (i.e. retest).
During the conference, teachers will:
Work with students to create a clear action plan that includes specifics for make-up work or improvements, along with deadlines.
Guide students in sharing their Engaged Eagle Flight Plan with their parents through email, Canvas, or another appropriate method.
If a student refuses to complete the plan, teachers will contact parents/guardians and notify the student's administrator.
Eagles finish strong by preparing for final assessments.
Cumulative examinations reinforce the importance of overall course standards.
At the end of each semester, the teacher will administer an appropriately challenging examination that meets the following guidelines:
All exams will be cumulative, covering material from the beginning of the term to the end of the term.
Students will be individually accountable; no group tests, open-book, or open-note tests will be allowed.
All exams will be written and should contain both objective and open-ended questions.
The written examination will be administered during a designated exam period. In addition, exams may contain performance elements that should be administered before the exam period. Projects will not be given in lieu of exams.
Exams will be preceded by an exam review with a study guide provided to students.
Unless a student meets the requirements below to exempt their exam, ALL students will be required to take the exam.
If an exam grade causes a student to fail a course, one retake is permitted on exam make-up day for a maximum grade of 70%. Teachers may elect to write a makeup test or reuse the original exam.
Eagles aim high with STRONG grades and CONSISTENT attendance.
As mentioned above, this policy does not apply to Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment (DE), End-of-Course (EOC), performance tasks in Fine Arts courses, or virtual classes. Students take End-of-Course (EOC) exams in Algebra 1, Biology, English 2, and US History.
Absences that do not count against your exam exemption days:
Medical - All visits to a doctor must be verified by a note from the doctor stating the exact dates the student was under the doctor’s care and the date the student is allowed to return to school. Students who have regularly scheduled appointments (monthly or weekly check-ins) must be present in class for at least 1 hour in order to be counted present. Sign-outs that do not meet this requirement will be counted as an absence.
Death in Immediate Family - Students must bring the obituary of a deceased family member.
Clover High School sponsored field trips - These trips must be Clover High School affiliated. Outside agencies, teams, and organizations do not fall under this category and will count as an absence.
