Upcoming information for 8th graders:
Hello 8th grade families! I will be visiting classrooms in September to talk about High School Focus Programs. If you are interested in more information, please click this link: LPS Focus Programs. I will also have informational flyers available to families at Parent Teacher conferences on September 25th and 30th.
We’re learning about the German school system, and students will be able to compare and contrast with the American system in English.
Students are learning German words to describe their classes, teachers, as well as what and when activities take place.
We will also start our Southeast Pen Pals in a few weeks- each Irving student is paired with a Southeast Student to exchange ‘letters’ in German. They’ll write about classes, what they like and don’t like, and ask each other questions.
American History (Bayne & Davison)
We are wrapping up our first summative assessment which is a contextual writing response on Pocahontas and John Smith.
After an understanding of the formation of the 13 colonies which became U.S. states, we move on to our unit on the Atlantic Slave Trade. After an understanding of the basics of the horrors of the trade, we look at what different people in the 18th century said about the experience. We read from a slave ship captain, a crew member and many enslaved people, culminating in our first District Common Assessment (DCA) of the year.
Pictured is Olaudah Equiano, the main subject of our DCA. He has a remarkable story. He experienced the Middle Passage as an enslaved person, but was eventually able to work his way for his freedom and spent the rest of his life working as an abolitionist.
Publications (Tobey)
Students in Publications have been learning about the parts of a yearbook, critiquing sample yearbooks, and developing ideas for theme. Our Walsworth representative visited us in class to talk about how to make a unique-to-Irving theme, and students are currently creating a “mock yearbook” to develop a theme of their choice through a color scheme, font choices, design elements, and divider page titles. Next up: voting on our 2025-2026 yearbook theme!
