6th graders are really getting into their routines! I’ve visited their classrooms so they know how to set up a meeting with me. It wouldn’t hurt to ask them if they know (go to our 6th grade google classroom and click on appointments. Then pick a time!) I’ll be talking to them about friendships/conflict at the end of the month. Feel free to call or call or email me anytime with questions or concerns!

Brown, Haney, & Regnier Science
Current Unit: Thermal Energy
Students investigate the different cup features they conjecture are important to explaining the phenomenon, starting with the lid. They model how matter can enter or exit the cup via evaporation. However, they find that in a completely closed system, the liquid inside the cup still changes temperature. This motivates the need to trace the transfer of energy into the drink as it warms up. Through a series of lab investigations and simulations, students find that there are two ways to transfer energy into the drink: (1) the absorption of light and (2) thermal energy from the warmer air around the drink. They are then challenged to design their own drink container that can perform as well as the store-brought container, following a set of design criteria and constraints.
Next Unit: Weather
Guiding Question: Why does a lot of hail, rain, or snow fall at some times but not others?
Business & Technology 6: Tobey & Ebeler
6th Grade Business & Technology students are in the midst of the Google Docs section of the Computer Software Applications Unit. They are learning all about the options and formatting available to Google Docs users! Students are next writing Bio Poems and formatting them to specific formatting. Students will then learn about columns and lists (both bulleted and numbered). Lastly, students will have a summative assignment where they will put to use all of the things they have learned about Google Docs!
Course 1 Math: Lawrey, Hammack, Schafer
Current Chapter: Chapter 2: Arithmetic Strategies and Area. In chapter 2, students will represent data in several ways. They will also focus on area, perimeter, and how multiplication relates to using a model called a generic rectangle.
Looking Ahead:
Chapter 2 Assessment by October 1
Chapter 3: Portions and Integers
Please check gradebook for upcoming assignments and assessments and to monitor your child’s progress

Chapter 3 Objectives: In chapter 3, students will use a powerful new tool for finding equivalent fractions; use percents, decimals, and fractions to describe a portion of a whole; represent portions as percents, decimals, and fractions with pictures, symbols, and words; and find the decimal form of a number when it is given as a percent or fraction.
Looking Ahead:

Mrs. Pieper - 6th FCS
Students in Healthy Living are just wrapping up their sewing projects. They did an awesome job working in the sewing lab. The rest of our quarter will be spent on a safety and sanitation unit in the kitchen. We will also work on measuring and working with their group to complete food labs.
