6th GRADE UPDATES/REMINDERS: Mrs. Kluck-Spann
We are nearing the end of 1st quarter and our 6th grade students are officially off to a great start to their middle school careers! Irving teachers across all grade levels and content areas have done an exceptional job teaching, practicing, reviewing, reteaching and reinforcing school wide expectations and classroom routines/procedures. For example, so far this school year, 6th grade students have earned over 6,000 positive reports for meeting our expectations by being safe, responsible and respectful throughout the school day!
Our school wide data indicates that over 90% of our 6th grade students have consistently been safe, responsible and respectful, without earning any minor behavior consequences such as an out of class movement. Our teachers will continue to hold students to high expectations, provide opportunities to reteach expectations, reward students for meeting expectations and also hold students accountable if/when they struggle to meet classroom or school wide expectations. If/when there are any behavior or academic concerns, we will be transparent and communicate with parents/guardians and students. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teachers, our 6th grade counselor (Mr. Rehm) or to any Irving administrator.
Skills/routines/procedures we have been focusing on with our 6th grade students include:
Walking in the hallway
Keeping hands, feet, objects to self at all times (even with friends!)
Being on time to class
Using the correct stairwell to 6th grade CORE classes
Time management–only going to lockers before school, before PE (if students need to change shoes and after school
Organizational/study skills-keeping chromebooks charged, being prepared for class with materials
Creating an inclusive, welcoming positive school climate by being kind to others
The school year has been off to a great start! Thank you for sharing your students with us and for being a part of the Irving community!
6th graders have been working so hard and you can tell everyone is looking forward to a break! I visited classrooms earlier this week to share a lesson about conflict and how to respond in difficult situations. Our 6th graders are well versed in what it means to have conflict and can identify bullying. We also talked about how you can respond in these situations. I'll be starting a new groups regarding middle school friendships after the quarter. If you think your student would be a good fit for a group, please let me know!
As always, feel free to call or call or email me anytime with questions or concerns!

Art-Mrs. Covey
Students in Healthy Living are just wrapping up their sewing projects. They did an awesome job working in the sewing lab. The rest of our quarter will be spent on a safety and sanitation unit in the kitchen. We will also work on measuring and working with their group to complete food labs.
HUMANITIES 6: Vaughn, Jensen, Regnier, Paulson, Okamoto, Petersen
All classes are starting to wrap up Unit 1, with most groups taking the 6B Comprehension Assessment over “The Secret of the Yellow Death” this week. Additionally, all classes will be writing an informative essay, describing two individuals who showed a major character trait within the text. These essays will be completed towards the end of this week, or early next week.
Unit 2 will begin with social studies Thread 2, which discusses early hunter-gatherer societies and the development of agriculture on early humans.
