We are in the midst of the divisions of the 1850s and 1860s. Students focus on the causes of secession ending with a project on a person or cause which impacted the divisions of the 1850s. Students make a slideshow on the person or event and present the slideshow. For 5th period, the students are a touch ahead, presently exploring the question “How did the Civil War change politically and on the battlefield over time?” They answer the question next week. After that we focus on how African Americans impacted the war.
Students have been spending last week and this week talking about abolitionism, and the key players in the abolitionist movement. Last week we discussed the principles of the abolitionist movement, and now we are discussing the role of women in this movement. This is all in preparation for the key moments leading up to the Civil War, and preparing for discussions about the Civil War, which will be our next unit of study. Students have also finished up their writing about slave narratives, which is their most recent summative grade. Please check with your student to see if they’ve completed this assignment.
This quarter, our students completed their Argumentative DCAs based on the novels Just Mercy (differentiated classes) and Wolf Hollow (grade-level classes). Differentiated English classes finished Just Mercy and engaged in a research project connected to the story before their DCA. Grade-level classes wrapped up Wolf Hollow, focusing on story analysis prior to their DCA. As we begin 4th quarter, we will start our Holocaust unit. Grade-level classes will read Prisoner B-3087, while differentiated classes will explore Night. Please check in with your student to see if they have completed all Quarter 3 assignments.
