NB at the end when you submit the Quiz, you will be asked if you have watched this video. You can do that now if you like.
There is no statutory or common law that requires you to use a fire extinguisher if you don't want to and there is no law that requires you to assist helping others in an emergency IF it places your own life in danger.
See below for the different types of fire extinguishers and the types of fires you could use them on. All of our extinguishers have a sign above them that tells you what you can use that fire for. You have to have the right extinguisher for the type of fire or using it may cause more damage. If you are unsure, don't use the extinguisher.
We are required to have our fire extinguishers, exit lights, loud speakers and sirens all regularly tested. If you need to use an extinguisher, you should not put it back on its bracket but rather lay it down on the floor and tell someone it's been used so it can be recharged.
Use a Fire Extinguisher only if
you know that the extinguisher is suitable for use on the flammable materials involved in the fire;
you have considered whether electricity is possibly involved and, if so, that the available extinguishing agent is non-conducting;
you can extinguish the fire quickly;
you are not putting your safety at risk by staying in the vicinity of the fire; and
all other persons have been evacuated from the area.
