For weekdays or services, in the event of a suspected fire, staff should Investigate the situation. If there is any doubt regarding whether there is a fire situation, ‘000’ should be called.
Employees should interact with customers during an emergency by:
clearly and calmly telling customers if there is a need to stay where they are or evacuate;
directing the customers toward the exits and asking them to remove themselves from the building until told they may return;
ensure no new customers enter the building; and
visually confirming that everyone is behaving as needed.
Staff should remove themselves to the Assembly Area after evacuating customers, if it was safe to do so.
At the Assembly Area staff will be told to wait until the all clear has been given before returning to the cafe.
If the fire has started in the cafe, any worker can call ‘000’ and provide details of the incident and building address. The Cafe Fire Warden, Manager or Supervisor should immediately contact the Chief Fire Warden.
The Supervisor should take a copy of the daily roster to the evacuation area.
The Cafe Fire Warden, Manager or Supervisor should switch off all electric items including cookers, fryers, overhead extractors, air conditioning and gas mains if safely able to.
Even if staff are able to put out a fire, someone must still call the Chief Fire Warden.
In the event of an Electrical Fire
Shut electricity down - main switch out back of cafe.
Put out by fire blanket or extinguisher; switching the power off is the most important thing.
Do not pull plug from wall if power is still on.
In the event of a Fat Fire
Use an extinguisher or blanket if safe to do so.
Turn off any exhaust fans.
In the event of a Generic Fire
For example if the fire started in the upstairs office? Follow all other procedures for first response, evacuation and contacting the Chief Fire Warden.
