Sem 6: English Language and Literature teaching

The Teaching course, another unique course in Goa, among the other English programmes, and yes, I love this as well! A third year, sixth semester elective course, students can opt to pick this elective, which is an introduction to English Language and Literature Teaching. For those who want to get into B.Ed, or want to choose to teach at the college level, then this is a must for you. Where PG programmes don't have a teaching course like this (We do! Our PG teaching course employs assisting a teacher assistant as part of the course!), this really helps students understand the new world of Teaching-learning and evaluation methodologies used today.

In this course the units are broken into Theory and application, and we exclusively learn through the process of actual teaching. Simply put, you learn by teaching! I handle this course entirely, teaching through a combination of cooperative learning sessions, lectures (very few to be honest), and students teaching using strategies and methodologies in the syllabus. You will not only learn theory, but more importantly learn to apply them in a classroom setting. Your continuous assessments include teaching a class and drafting a report delineating your learning, and execution. We have critical feedback sessions, working on everything from your demeanour as a facilitator, to how you control your learning environment, and how to create resources for courses. Finals include teaching in -real-time having borrowed a teaching session from a teacher in the department.

Here is one of the topics I teach in this course - Flipped Learning. I use Flipped Learning to teach it. Creating the video is part of the new movement of creating resources, using web 2.0 tools. Thus, to teach students, I need to do it myself.
