(Comics Studies)

Comics Studies! A favourite of mine! A second year, fourth semester elective course, students can opt to pick this elective, which is an introduction to Comics Studies. Our Master's programme has a follow-up course, which looks at perspectives. You will not only be introduced to various graphic novels (all the essentials: Maus, Watchmen, Contract with God, V for Vendetta, Fun Home, Batman, Superman even!), but you will be given a chance to explore various comics traditions of the world reading through Manga, European comics, and Indian Comics. You will learn concepts, and key-terms and learn to apply them through a thorough reading of contextual texts.

This course is one-of-a-kind in the whole of India, last I checked. After we introduced this way back in 2015, Goa University has also created one for the Master's programme. Like they say, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

I handle this course, entirely, teaching through a combination of cooperative learning sessions, lectures (very few to be honest), tutorials, role-plays, projects, with self-study through presentations and submissions. We also watch adapted movies, and TV shows! Continuous assessments form a major portion of the credits in this course. Students will continue writing term-papers in this course as they explore various ideas in the selected readings. Students are encouraged to read expansively as the selections are mere gateways.

If you want to live, breathe and consume comics - this is the course for you!

Comix Day! - A Continuous Assessment

Students prepare and present their knowledge on a day dedicated to Comics. They are evaluated on the information that they present, ane how they interact with other students, teachers and guests, who have no idea what Graphic novels or comics are about. This year Comix Day! was held along with Latin American Day on 28 February 2020. Student groups came out with extremely interesting ways to put forward their chosen graphic novel, and what they explored in it. One group created a coffin to explain Fun Home! (confused? read Fun Home!)

Comic Con Mumbai Study Tour - an extension of the course

Students get a chance to attend Comic Con Mumbai in this study tour, where fun and learning go hand in hand. Not only do students cosplay characters but they meet Indian artists, writers, as well as international guests. Two days packed with experiences that they cherish forever.
