This is considered the absolute highlight of fifth grade. Students head up to Camp Cheley near Estes Park, stay in cabins, and engage in numerous educational and fun activities, including:
A hike to the top of Mount Cathedral
Develop teamwork through games
Learn the meaning of resilience on a climbing wall
Learn how to build a fire and other survival skills
Nature hike in Rocky Mountain National Park
Participate in team building activities on a ropes course
A night walk around the camp
Campfire sing along and a visit with a special talent
By far, the most important impact of this trip is the bonding that occurs between students, and between students and teachers. The class will become a more cohesive group through this shared experience. Cost is $280-325.
Fifth graders learn how a town really works. They will elect a mayor, judge, and interview for various jobs. Students will earn paychecks, learn how to open bank accounts, and manage their money. Cost is $40-50.
Students will tie dye T-shirts as a memento of their fifth grade year. It symbolizes the "ties" between students and teachers built throughout the year, and throughout their elementary school years. But each T-shirt design is unique to each student, showing their individuality. Students tie and dye their own shirts and wear them to our end-of-year picnic. Cost is $5-7 for the T-shirt and tie-dye materials.
Students celebrate the end of the year through activities and food. They will spend the day participating in activities and tradition before enjoying lunch. Each student brings in food item (list will be provided).
This is our last day of school and the fifth grade team's special gift to students. We hike down to Willow Creek park and enjoy one last day together as a group. Students will have lots of free time and pizza lunch is provided, courtesy of Willow Creek PTO. We will play group games and pose for one last photograph together. At the end of the day, we hike back to school and say goodbye for the year. As a special rite of passage, this will be the last day of school for fifth graders. They do not attend school the last day.
