Fifth grade students' academic progress is assessed in a number of ways: standardized tests, unit tests, and classroom work. Report cards containing a measure of student progress are sent home to parents three times per year. During each trimester, student work is assessed and reported in the following way:
Standards Reporting - student performance is measured against state academic standards. The goal is for students to reach proficiency on each of the standards. For that to occur, students must demonstrate meeting the standard consistently and independently. Following is the standards-based grading scale and criteria:
4 - Advanced - Consistently and independently performing ABOVE grade level
3 - Proficient - Consistently and independently performing AT grade level
2 - Partially Proficient - Progress toward proficiency is inconsistent
1 - Emerging - Student needs more time to achieve proficiency
Please note that achieving Proficiency (3) is the objective for each student. To achieve a rating of Advanced (4), the student must exceed fifth grade level work on a consistent and independent basis. This is a very high standard to meet.
