Hey-o! I’m Katherine Taddeo, and I love stories and science. That’s why I’m studying environmental policy and professional writing at Champlain. In learning about the environmental issues of the past, present, and future, I want to focus on why these problems exist in the first place and what can be done to raise awareness about them. To me, learning about the natural world in a narrative form makes the subject much clearer and memorable. As humans, we have a tendency to relate stories and to listen to them. I wanted to listen to a story about a people who have lived and respected the land that we currently are on for thousands of years: the Abenaki. The Abenaki were the first Americans in this land, and they are the ones who have seen it nurtured, abused, and healed. If we want to be true Americans, we need to work together with the Abenaki, the first stewards of this land.
