Hi, my name is Jess Turner! I’m a junior at Champlain College and I’m majoring in Integrative Professional Studies with my threads being in Cybersecurity and Social Justice. For our collective project on food supply, I’m focusing on foraging as a form of sustainable, inexpensive, and local eating. Not a lot of folks know about the delicious and edible foods that are in their backyards, towns, local parks and forests. Equal access to healthy foods falls under the issue of social justice. Through my research I’ve found that the inaccessibility of sustainable and ethical eating is a byproduct of racism and classism. Exploring those issues and creating a solution involves both areas of my studies. In collaboration with my peers, we aim to create an interactive website where users can gain knowledge on various areas of local and global food supply. I hope to present my research in a way that excites others to explore the nature around them and see that space as an extension of their food supply, hosting a natural garden of abundant and diverse foods.
